Spectro-Chrome
The Spectro-Chrome method was developed in the United States between 1920 and 1940 by Dinshah Ghadiali (see chapter 1). It has since acquired the questionable honor of becoming one of the most denigrated methods of chromotherapy, showcased in museums dedicated to quackery and cited as an example of delusion about the supposed magical powers of color.
Dinshah was unfortunate to live during the time of the rising power of Big Pharma and the associated medical establishment. He was brought to trial in 1931 and again in 1947 for inaccurately describing his product, at which time he lost his case and received a three-year prison sentence. In 1952 the FBI destroyed all his instruments and documents. Then, from 1958 on, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned his work permanently, a ban still in effect today. However, Dinshah Ghadiali’s son, Darius Dinshah, today strives to keep alive the method invented by his father. As it is still under FDA injunction he must limit his efforts to education. To that effect, in 1975 he founded the Dinshah Health Society and later published the manual Let There Be Light, which describes the core of his father’s method.
As a result of its suppression, the original Spectro-Chrome method has not evolved very much since Dinshah Ghadiali’s day and has become a sort of relic of chromotherapy from the last century. So what is the truth about its validity? Surprisingly, the general properties of color as established by Dinshah (1933) for the Spectro-Chrome method are still the foundation of most modern chromotherapy methods. Dinshah (as he preferred to be known, since he considered his family name too difficult to pronounce for most Americans) seems to have come to an understanding that is still pertinent today. Several modern researchers have taken his work and adapted it by making use of the new possibilities offered by the advance of technology.
